Have it in my right hip and right foot. Got to admit, it is one of the most excruciating pains I have ever known, and I have had four heart attacks, a double by-pass, renal failure using peritineal dialysis, a ruptured Achilles tendon amongst other things. I am also on Allipurinol. 100% effective.

If your father knows he has gouty arthritis, is he not already under a doctor's care?
There is no cure, quick or otherwise, only management. This is a disease asociated with an inborn error of uric acid metabolism. But there is another form, acquired gout, that has all the same signs and symptoms but results from another disorder or from the treatment for another condition. For example, diuretics can cause this because they alter the composition of uric acid so that it leaves the blood and settles in the joints.
Treatment includes colchine, phenylbutazone, indomethacin, glucocorticoids and a diet that excludes purine-rich foods such as organ meats. There are other foods high in purines that you can identify by running a search for "purine-rich foods".

Sure is.
Go see a doctor and get a prescription for ALLOPURINOL- about 300 mg per day in separate doses
Get a good checkup too, for metabolic disorders. Gout is caused by excess Uric Acid in the organism (blood test)
Also see if it is the diet that may be the main cause. The drug will limit the painfull effects, but he'll have to keep taking it unless his diet/ metabolism improves

having suffered from gout, I know only too well the pain this causes. unfortunately there is no quick cure, but it can be controlled by allapurinol. - I have to take one tablet a day, but since being prescribed this by my doctor, the attacks (which were regular) are now virtually unknown, so a trip to the doctors is the sensible answer. If you dont do anything about it, it will keep coming back.

Large doses of a nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drug (NSAID) although Colchicine is sometimes prescribed when NSAIDs are not considered suitable. Cherries seem to help some people, so do charcoal poultices, charcoal bathing or charcoal by mouth. Try to avoiid aspirin or acetaminophen as they can make gout worse by stopping your excretion of uric acid. Applying a crushed ice-pack to area of pain also helps some people and herb teas help others. But steer clear of beer as that can increase uric acid production and stop its secretion. Drink lots of water.

His doctor should be able to help him. Not everyone is the same, what suits one person might not suit your dad.
